Blessings to you, the readers of this page, in Jesus Christ our Lord. May He guide you and protect you always.
4:7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loves is born of God, and knows God. 4:8 He that loves not knows not God; for God is love. 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 4:11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 4:12 No man has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwells in us, and his love is perfected in us. 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 4:15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him, and he in God. 4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God has to us. God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him. 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear: because fear has torment. He that fears is not made perfect in love. 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us. 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar: for he that loves not his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 4:21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loves God love his brother also.Source: 1 John 4:7-21 (KJCNT)

The new Pope begins on a beautiful note, with an inspired message on the overwhelming importance of love. He considers the relationship between love and justice, which we encounter most clearly as the conflict between forgiveness and punishment; and he deals directly with the difficult distinctions and relationships of sexual/erotic love (eros), friendship/brotherly love (philia), and selfless/Godly love (agape).
He also moves directly into the real world, as he boldly asserts the need for Christians to work for justice in Public Life, saying,"Justice is both the aim and the intrinsic criterion of all politics. Politics is more than a mere mechanism for defining the rules of public life: its origin and its goal are found in justice, which by its very nature has to do with ethics. The State must inevitably face the question of how justice can be achieved here and now. But this presupposes an even more radical question: what is justice? The problem is one of practical reason; but if reason is to be exercised properly, it must undergo constant purification, since it can never be completely free of the danger of a certain ethical blindness caused by the dazzling effect of power and special interests."
This statement is of particular importance to me, as I find myself being more-and-more led into active political involvement, and wondering if this is the right thing for me to do.
So nobody can say he is afraid to take on difficult and important subjects.
I don't claim to understand all of this yet, but I'm working on it. And just because the Pope said it, I don't necessarily believe it, being a Christian Universalist Protestant as I am. Nevertheless, he obviously is a brilliant thinker, and he didn't get to be Pope because God hated him. Therefore I give great respect to any of his official messages, particularly this first one in his administration. It is clear, however, that the Pope considers love to be "the most important thing," as I do also. So he is starting off in exactly the right direction, as far as I'm concerned.
May the Lord help each of us as we study the first Papal Encyclical from the new Catholic Pope, who is leader of more Christians than any other person in the world.
