God Desires Mercy From Us, Not Sacrifice

God does not desire sacrifice from us. When we deprive ourselves, it does Him no good. What he wants from us, instead of sacrifice, is mercy. That is, He wants us to be merciful to one another.

The mind of man, ever corrupt, ever legalistic, has created a whole set of false demands based on the idea that God is somehow pleased if we deprive ourselves.

Jesus tries to set us straight.

       Matthew 9:13 (KJV)
       But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not
       sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners
       to repentance.
       Matthew 12:7 (KJV)
       But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not
       sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
       Hosea 6:6 (KJV)
       For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God
       more than burnt offerings.

Now, whenever He calls us to do so, we should be prepared to give up everything we have, including our bodies to be burned if necessary, to do His will, as Jesus did His will. But this is not mere sacrifice, this is sacrificial service. Mere sacrifice, whose only objective is our own deprivation, is worthless to God.

Here is an earthly comparison: Consider a man who is trying to show his love for a woman, and he says, "See how much I love you! I'll hit myself on the head with a hammer for you!" Do you think this is what she wants from him? No!
