Blessings to you, the readers of this page, in Jesus Christ our Lord. May He guide you and protect you always.
There are only five references in the entire Bible to "mustard seed," but these five are in total agreement and are very important.
Three of these references tell the same parable, "The Parable Of The Mustard Seed," in the words of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Let's read them now . . .
The Parable Of The Mustard Seed
MATTHEW 13:31-32 (KJV)
31
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The
kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed,
which a man took, and sowed in his field:
32
Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it
is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and
becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come
and lodge in the branches thereof.
MARK 4:30-32 (KJV)
30
And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of
God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is
sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be
in the earth:
32
But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh
greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great
branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge
under the shadow of it.
LUKE 13:18-19 (KJV)
18
Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like?
and whereunto shall I resemble it?
19
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took,
and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a
great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the
branches of it.
What does this parable tell us?
It tells us that the Kingdom of God starts very small within us, then can grow very large and strong. The main idea is the transformation of the tiny mustard seed into the large, powerful mustard tree, largest of all the herbs.
The image of the tiny seed sprouting and growing into a large tree, with birds living in the branches, is a very powerful idea.
The Kingdom of God is a kingdom of faith, because we cannot see it, but we know it's there. We enter it through faith.
Faith, too, is like a mustard seed, starting very small, then able to grow tremendously. Faith grown to full size, like a mustard seed grown into a mustard tree, is able to accomplish all things!
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for
verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard
seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder
place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible
unto you. (Matthew 17:20 KJV)
And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard
seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked
up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should
obey you. (Luke 17:6 KJV)
