Are We Required To Suffer For Our Salvation?
Bible says "No."

By Rev. Bill McGinnis, Director - LoveAllPeople.org

It Is False Doctrine To Teach That We Must Suffer As Christ Suffered In Order To Be Worthy Of Salvation

There is a false doctrine, taught by some, which teaches that we must suffer as Christ suffered in order to be worthy of salvation. This doctrine is based on a false connection between the cup Jesus gave to the twelve to drink at the last supper and the cup He prayed about in Gethsemane.

In reality, these are two completely different cups, with two completely different purposes.

With the first cup, cited in Matthew 26:27-28, Jesus is instructing us to take Him inside of us by drinking His blood (the wine) and eating His body (the bread.) This instruction is the basis for Holy Communion, which has been faithfully observed since the founding of His Church.

         _____________________________________________________________

        MATTHEW 26:27-28 (KJV)
        27
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them,
               saying, Drink ye all of it;
        28
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed
for many for the remission of sins.
         _____________________________________________________________

The second cup, cited in Matthew 26:39, refers to God's will that Jesus give Himself as a sacrifice for us. This is the essence of His plan for our salvation.
"And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and
prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this
cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou
               wilt." (Matthew 26:39 KJV)

It is a terrible mistake to think that these two different cups refer to the same thing. The only similarity between them is the word "cup."

Jesus was required by God to suffer on the cross in our behalf. Because He has already suffered for us, we do not need to suffer if we accept Him as our Savior. This is the essential concept of salvation by faith in Christ: that He paid the price for us so that we do not have to pay it. If we ourselves still must suffer for our salvation, what did Jesus accomplish for us? If we ourselves must suffer to obtain our salvation, then what use is the "free gift" of salvation, given to those who believe in Jesus?

        ROMANS 5:15-17 (KJV)
        15
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if
through the offence of one many be dead, much more the
grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man,
Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
        16
And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for
the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift
is of many offences unto justification.
        17
For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much
more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift
of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus
               Christ.)
         _____________________________________________________________

Jesus paid the full price for us. We are not required to suffer or to strive or to work hard or to earn our own salvation in any way. It is a gift from God, given to those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord. We do not earn it by our own efforts or suffering or exertions in any way. It comes to us through faith alone, by the grace of God.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his
only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting
             life." (John 3:16 KJV)

Salvation comes by faith alone, not by works, lest anyone should boast.
        --------------------------------------------------------------
        EPHESIANS 2:8-9 (KJV)

        8
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves: it is the gift of God:
        9
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
