Blessings to you, the readers of this page, in Jesus Christ our Lord. May He guide you and protect you always.
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and
shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the
dead, thou shalt be saved." (Romans 10:9 KJV)
Some people mistakenly read 2 Corinthians 11:4 and think Paul is
actually referring to some Jesus other than the Son of God, our Lord.
Then, they are able to dismiss the Mormons and some others as not being Christians, because they are worshiping "some other Jesus," not our Jesus.
But this is not the case. Paul, who is not known for being lighthearted, is here indulging in a little unusual "folly," a joke, a play on words.
This becomes clear when you read the entire passage . . .
2 CORINTHIANS 11:1-4 (KJV)
1
Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly:
and indeed bear with me.
2
For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have
espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a
chaste virgin to Christ.
3
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve
through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted
from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we
have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which
ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not
accepted, ye might well bear with him.
Paul was rhetorically defending himself against criticism that he was
not a very polished speaker. He never intended to suggest that there were
actually more than one Jesus.
If there were more than one Jesus, then 1 John 4:1-3 would be incorrect. This "trial of the spirits" would then be meaningless, because a deceitful spirit could refer to another Jesus and pass the test!
1 JOHN 4:1-3 (KJV)
1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits
whether they are of God: because many false prophets are
gone out into the world.
2
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that
confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of
God:
3
And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is
come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit
of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come;
and even now already is it in the world.
So we see that there is only one Jesus, and anyone who accepts Him as
their Lord, meeting the conditions of Romans 10:9, is a Christian,
regardless of any errors in their doctrine or other imperfection.
