Blessings to you, the readers of this page, in Jesus Christ our Lord. May He guide you and protect you always.
"For I say unto you, That except your righteousness
shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and
Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom
of heaven." (Matthew 5:20 KJV)
Consider the law concerning adultery: adultery was clearly forbidden by
the law, and the Pharisees no doubt avoided adultery altogether.
Yet this avoidance of actual adultery was not enough! In order to
truly
fulfill the law, they needed to eliminate adulterous *thoughts* also!.
"Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time,
Thou shalt not commit adultery:
"But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman
to lust after her hath committed adultery with her
already in his heart." (Matthew 5:27-28 KJV)
Do you ever have adulterous thoughts? The Pharisees obviously did, or else
Jesus would not have used this as an example. I certainly do, too.
And so do you, whoever you may be. We *all* break His law, saved and
unsaved, no matter how pious we may appear.
And if we break the law in any one point, we have broken it in all points!
"For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one
point, he is guilty of all." (James 2:10 KJV)
Paul summarizes the futility of trying to attain righteousness by
following the law.
ROMANS 3:10-20 (KJV)
10
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
11
There is none that understandeth, there is none that
seeketh after God.
12
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become
unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
13
Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they
have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14
Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15
Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16
Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17
And the way of peace have they not known:
18
There is no fear of God before their eyes.
19
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it
saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may
be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before
God.
20
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be
justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of
sin.
