Your Friend's New Coat

NOTE: When you read this prayer, try to imagine hearing my voice as I speak
it to you.  In this way, the prayer is reactivated, and it is the same
as if I were actually praying for you at that moment.
(Just like television prayers are reactivated when you watch 
them, although the videotape may have been shot years before.)

                 You see your friend while walking to your car;
                 You notice that he has a nice new coat;
                 And as you stop to talk with him, you think
                 That many things he has are very nice:
                 Far better than the junk that is your own.
                 You feel resentment growing in your heart.

                          *          *         *

                 Resentment is a very harmful thing.
                 It casts a cloud on everything you do.
                 A bright and sunny day seems dull and bleak.
                 And so I pray the Lord to enter in
                 And help you feel more grateful for His love.
                 The things you really need He will provide,
                 (But sometimes you must ask specifically.)
                 And if He blesses others more than you,
                 I pray that you remember He is God,
                 And He bestows His favors as he wants.

                          *          *         *

                 You have no claim at all upon the Lord,
                 The things He gives to you are gifts, not debts,
                 For He is God and you are only Man,
                 Created in His image, to be sure,
                 But only image, not the thing itself.
                 You are not God, so do not be confused.
