CHRIST, WHOSE GLORY FILLS THE SKIES - by Charles Wesley , 1707-1788
                                         Public Domain

                 Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
                 Christ, the true, the only Light,
                 Sun of Righteousness, arise,
                 Triumph o'er the shades of night;
                 Day-spring from on high, be near;
                 Day-star, in my heart appear.

                 Dark and cheerless is the morn
                 Unaccompanied by thee;
                 Joyless is the day's return,
                 Till thy mercy's beams I see;
                 Till they inward light impart,
                 Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.

                 Visit then this soul of mine,
                 Pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
                 Fill me, Radiancy Divine,
                 Scatter all my unbelief;
                 More and more thyself display,
                 Shining to the perfect day.

                       *     *      *

                     The Lord's Prayer

          Our Father, who art in heaven,
            hallowed be thy Name,
            thy kingdom come,
            thy will be done,
              on earth as it is in heaven.
          Give us this day our daily bread.
          And forgive us our trespasses,
            as we forgive those who trespass against us.
          And lead us not into temptation,
            but deliver us from evil.
          For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
            for ever and ever. Amen.

      I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
      Maker of heaven and earth:
      And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;
      Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit;
      Born of the Virgin Mary,
      Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
      Was crucified, dead, and buried;
      He descended into hell;
      The third day he rose again from the dead;
      He ascended into heaven
      And sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
      From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
      I believe in the Holy Spirit;
      The holy catholic church;     *
      The communion of saints;
      The forgiveness of sins;
      The resurrection of the body;
      And the life everlasting.

                             Amen.

                * Note: "catholic church" here means the entire body of
                  believers in Christ, not just one particular church.

The many problems and demands of this life, which the Bible calls "the cares of this world," can easily overwhelm us if we let them. We feel we must do this or that; we must plan for this or that; we must somehow deal with this or that etc., etc., etc.

The Bible recognizes this situation, and the difficulties it can cause.

Mark 4:19 (KJV)

   "And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches,
    and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and
    it becometh unfruitful."

So what should we do when the cares of our world seem to close in on us, causing distress and confusion?

WE SHOULD CAST OUR CARES ON JESUS! Jesus is our Lord and our Saviour. We have given ourselves to Him, so we now belong to Him. He has been given all power in Heaven and Earth, so we should let Him take care of these things for us. We should let Him figure things out and tell us what to do. Our job is to do whatever He clearly tells us to do. His job is to arrange the big plans. We are overstepping our boundaries when we feel we have to figure everything out for ourselves.

Here are some Scriptures I have found on this subject.

Matthew 11:29-31 (KJV)

   "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek
    and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
    For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

John 14:27 (KJV)

   "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as
    the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be
    troubled, neither let it be afraid."

Romans 14:17 (KJV)

   "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness,
    and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."

2 Thessalonians 3:16 (KJV)

   "Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all
    means. The Lord be with you all."

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

   "Be careful (filled with care, anxious) for nothing; but in
    every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let
    your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which
    passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through
    Christ Jesus."

1 Peter 5:6-7 (KJV)

  "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God,
   that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care
   upon him; for he careth for you."

A Prayer For You To Use As Needed

   O Lord, when I feel troubled and distressed,
   By all the cares and problems in this world,
   I pray that You will calm my anxious mind,
   And give to me Your peace within my heart.
   I pray You now do take my cares away,
   As I your servant cast them onto You.
   In Jesus' holy name I pray, Amen.

Poem - With MP3 Reading

"When Malindy Sings" - by Paul Laurence Dunbar

Original Poem in Dialect, by Paul Laurence Dunbar, converted into Near-Standard English and read by Rev. Bill McGinnis

BACKGROUND - from the press release

The website PaulLaurenceDunbar.net has released a new version of Paul Laurence Dunbar's classic dialect poem, "When Malindy Sings," written in Near-Standard English, by Rev. Bill McGinnis, a student and admirer of Dunbar and owner of the website.

"This beautiful poem of Dunbar's was originally written in slavery dialect," said McGinnis. "It is perhaps his most famous and best loved poem, even though the use of Dialect has been criticized by many, as demeaning to African-Americans."

Dunbar himself greatly preferred to write in Standard English, and he complained in vain that his publishers at the time would reject his Standard English poems -- no matter how good they were -- and ask him to please submit poems in Dialect, which they would then publish eagerly.

"But it seems to me that Dunbar deliberately wrote many of his Dialect poems in such a way that they could easily be converted into Near-Standard English at a future date, when the country was ready for them," said McGinnis. "A hundred and one years have now gone past since Paul Laurence Dunbar died," said McGinnis. "And I think the country is now ready for his Dialect poems to be converted into Standard English, or something almost like Standard English. I think this is what he hoped we would do when he wrote the Dialect poems."

WHEN MALINDY SINGS

                      Near-Standard English

             Go way and quit that noise, Miss Lucy--
               Put that music book away;
             What's the use to keep on trying?
               If you practice till you're gray,
             You can't start those notes a-flying
               Like the ones that rant and ring
             From the kitchen to the big woods
               When Malindy sings.

             You don't have the natural organs
               For to make the sound come right,
             You don't have the turns and twistings
               For to make it sweet and light.
             Tell you one thing now, Miss Lucy,
               And I'm telling you for true,
             When it comes to real right singing,
               It's no easy thing to do.

             Easy enough for folks to holler,
               Looking at the lines and dots,
             When there is no one can sense it,
               And the tune comes in, in spots;
             But for real melodious music,
               That just strikes your heart and clings,
             Just you stand and listen with me
               When Malindy sings.

            Have you never heard Malindy?
              Blessed soul, take up the cross!
            Look here, aren't you joking, honey?
              Well, you don't know what you lost.
            You should hear that girl a-warbling,
              Robins, larks and all those things,
            Hush their mouths and hide their faces
              When Malindy sings.

           Fiddling man just stops his fiddling,
             Lays his fiddle on the shelf;
           Mocking bird quits trying to whistle,
             Cause he's just so shamed himself.
           Folks a-playing on the banjo
             Drop their fingers on the strings--
           Bless your soul--forget to move them,
             When Malindy sings.

             She just spreads her mouth and hollers,
               "Come to Jesus," till you hear
             Sinners, trembling steps, and voices,
               Timid-like a-drawing near;
             Then she turns to "Rock of Ages,"
               Simply to the cross she clings,
             And you find your tears are dropping
               When Malindy sings.

            Who can say that humble praises
              With the Master never count?
            Hush your mouth, I hear that music,
              As it rises up and mounts--
            Floating by the hills and valleys,
              Way above this burying sod,
            As it makes its way in glory
              To the very gates of God!

           Oh, it's sweeter than the music
             Of an educated band;
           And it's dearer than the battle's
             Song of triumph in the land.
           It seems holier than evening
             When the solemn church bell rings,
           As I sit and calmly listen
             While Malindy sings.

          Towser, stop that barking, hear me!
            Mandy, make that child keep still;
          Don't you hear the echoes calling
            From the valley to the hill?
          Let me listen, I can hear it,
            Through the brush of angel's wings,
          Soft and sweet, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,"
            As Malindy sings.

Exhortation

Follow The Lord, As He Leads.

This is from a letter I wrote in reply to a question.
Follow the Lord As He Leads!

Hello xxx,

Thank you for the honor of asking my advice! I really don't know much about xxxxx, but I do know that the Lord will lead you STEP-BY- STEP to where He wants you to go. The secret is you must obey Him in the little things, and then He will give you more and more. Sometimes (usually) it doesn't make sense to you, what He is doing. You won't see the picture until all the pieces are complete. THEN you will say, "Oh! Now I understand why He did THAT!"

So how do you obey Him? How does He communicate to you? Sometimes He does NOT communicate directly to you. In this case, do the best you can to obey His will as you find it expressed in the Bible. At the very least, obey the ten commandments plus the "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and love thy neighbor as thyself" commandment. Then try to cultive the "Fruits of the Spirit." Try to be gentle, humble, slow to anger, quick to forgive, patient, meek, grateful. Ask Him to be with you, tell Him you love Him, tell Him that His love is more important to you than anything else. Pretty soon, He will make Himself known to you personally.

Be sensitive to that, listen for His distinctive voice. Then, do whatever He tells you to do, whether you understand "why" or not. Now, imposters (the evil one, you know) will try to confuse you with false messages. So recognize that the Lord will never tell you to do something that is contrary to scripture. So the Bible is your safeguard in this matter. Also, an imposter spirit will choke on his own tongue before he can utter the words "I know and declare that Jesus Christ is the risen Son of God and Saviour of the world." So if the voice that is speaking to you refuses to declare Jesus as Son of God, then do not listen to it.

One more word. Let HIM lead you, not yourself. Make yourself available to Him in any way He wants, then let Him tell you what to do.

Each of us must submit to something, even if it is only death. So why not go as high as you can go? Give yourself TOTALLY to the Lord, and let Him use you any way He wants. Don't question Him at all, once you are sure it is Him speaking. He is quite loving and reasonable, and He usually treats you better than you could have thought up for yourself!

May God bless you in your walk with Him.

Yours in Christ, Bill McGinnis

Prayer For You

"Go Ahead And Give Yourself To Christ"

NOTE: When you read this prayer, try to imagine hearing my voice as I
       speak it to you. In this way, the prayer is reactivated, and it
       the same as if I were actually praying for you at that moment.
       (Just like television prayers are reactivated when you watch
       them, although the videotape may have been shot years before.)

                Perhaps you are a Christian even now,
                You go to church and try to do your best,
                You try to put His teachings in your life,
                But still you do not feel that He is yours.
                You do not feel the closeness that you crave.
                If this is you, then say this prayer with me:
                     *             *             *
                O Lord, I want you closer in my life,
                I want you more to be a part of me.
                I want the best relationship with you,
                That anyone on earth could ever have.
                I know that, "as we give, we shall receive,"
                And so I now do give myself to you,
                In full completeness, holding nothing back.
                I'm yours, so you may use me as you will,
                And take whatever things you want from me.
                And now that I did give myself to you,
                I pray that you will give yourself to me,
                As bridegroom gives himself to his new bride.
                In Jesus' holy name I pray, Amen.

More lyrics and suggestions for use in your worship services.

1. Divide the congregation into two groups, perhaps males and females or youth and adult. Then have one group ask the question, "Do you know Jesus?" and the other group answers, "Yes we know Jesus!" Then reverse the groups and repeat the process.

              Do you know Jesus?
              Do you know Jesus?
              Do you know Jesus,
              And the wonder of His love?

              Yes, we know Jesus!
              Yes, we know Jesus!
              Yes, we know Jesus,
              And the wonder of His love!

2. Then have everybody ask themselves the question, "Do we know Jesus?" and answer it, "Yes, we know Jesus!"

              Do we know Jesus?
              Do we know Jesus?
              Do we know Jesus,
              And the wonder of His love?

              Yes, we know Jesus!
              Yes, we know Jesus!
              Yes, we know Jesus,
              And the wonder of His love!

Blessings to you in Jesus Christ our Lord.
